Diagnostic Guides

Apps Are Not Shielding Properly

  • Open iOS Settings > Screen Time and ensure Screen Time is turned ON.
  • Check Settings > Take a Break and verify Family Controls permission is granted.
  • Ensure the apps you wish to block are selected in Take a Break's app picker.
  • If you recently updated iOS, open the app once to refresh extension tokens.

How to Restore a Previous Purchase

  • Open Take a Break on your iPhone.
  • Open the upgrade screen (it appears when your access has lapsed, or from any locked premium feature).
  • Ensure you are logged into the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
  • Tap ‘Restore Purchases’ in the footer of that screen — that is the only place it lives — so StoreKit 2 can check your purchase and restore eligible access.

Wake Alarm Reliability Checklist

  • Allow Alarms (AlarmKit) permission in iOS Settings > Take a Break.
  • AlarmKit wake alarms ring through Silent mode and Focus. Check that alarm volume is audible.
  • Keep your device charged overnight. Reminder notifications are separate and use notification settings.

Emergency 'Turn Off Blocking' Safety Valve

  • If your subscription has ended, ‘Turn off blocking’ appears on the upgrade screen and on the early-unlock screen. With an active subscription, end a break early from the break card on Home (this spends banked Time Bank minutes, and Strict Mode restricts it during a break). In any state you can turn off Screen Time access for Take a Break in iOS Settings. The control is not in the app’s own Settings tab.
  • Take a Break is built to break compulsive habits with intentional friction, never to permanently trap you in an emergency.
